Move in games with your phone on your chest (Beta)

If your glasses don't have the XREAL Eye, your phone can do its job. Wear it on your chest with the back camera facing forward: the phone sees the room and knows where your body is, and the glasses know where your head turns. Together, you can lean, crouch and take steps in VR games, not only turn your head. This is called 6DoF.

Android
  • An Android phone that supports ARCore, with Google Play Services for AR installed from the Play Store. Without it, the 6DoF row asks you to install it.
  • XREAL glasses with head tracking on Android. See Supported glasses.
  • VR games set up.
  • A way to wear the phone snug on your chest, like a neck mount for phones or a chest harness for action cameras. A phone that swings on a loose strap doesn't work.
  • A room with light and with things to see. A blank wall is hard for the camera.

With the phone, 6DoF is off by default.

  1. In the glasses, open the settings panel (the sliders button on the strip) and choose the VR tab.
  2. Choose the 6DoF row.
  3. If you also have the XREAL Eye, choose Phone. Without the Eye, the phone is the only choice.
  4. Use the switch to turn it on or off.

The first time, MiruXR asks for the camera on the phone. Allow it.

6DoF starts when a game opens. MiruXR shows short steps over the game, with a drawing and a ring that fills as you go:

  1. Put your phone on your chest: snug, with the back camera facing forward and uncovered. Then look straight ahead.
  2. Move the way MiruXR asks. It shows one move at a time, the one it still needs, until the ring fills:
    • Take a step to the side, then step back.
    • Turn your whole body, to one side and the other, head included.
    • Now turn only your head, to one side and the other, with your body still.
  3. Done: you can move now. Walk, crouch or turn.

Until the steps are done, the game world stays still. After that, MiruXR calibrates your controllers, as usual. See Play a VR game.

  • If the phone's camera can't see (too dark, a plain wall, you moved very fast, or another app is using the camera), your position pauses and a notice over the game says why. Turning your head still works, and your position comes back when the camera sees again.
  • If you take the phone off your chest, MiruXR starts over and asks you to put it back.
  • The first time you lean forward, the world can shift a little while MiruXR learns how you lean.
  • It uses more battery, because the phone's camera is on during the whole game.
  • Play the game in 3D. If the game is in 2D, things near you don't stay in place when you move (MiruXR tells you once per game). In 3D they do.
  • Move carefully. Keep the space around you clear, and take small steps.
  • Center when you need to. Hold the center button of your controller to bring the game in front of you again. See Center the view.
  • The steps don't finish: turn on more light, face a part of the room with more things to see, and check that nothing covers the back camera.
  • The 6DoF row says Install Google Play Services for AR on your phone: tap the row. It opens Google Play Services for AR on Google Play: install or update it, and when you come back to MiruXR the row is ready.
  • The 6DoF row is missing: your phone isn't compatible with Google Play Services for AR (the Play Store says so on its page), or your glasses don't have head tracking.
  • It still doesn't work: turn 6DoF off in the VR tab. The game then follows the rotation of your head only.
